Former head of PlayStation WorldWide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has shed light on why Wild Sheep Studio and Ubisoft Paris’ survival game, Wild, was canceled.

During an interview on the MinnMax YouTube channel, former head of PlayStation WorldWide Studios Shuhei Yoshida recalled the canceled projects that were announced back in his time. Despite showing multiple trailers from these titles across various presentations, Sony Interactive Entertainment was unable to complete their development. He expressed that the cancellation of these games really hurt him personally, as they had begun with a lot of hope and excitement. Yoshida said that he really wanted some of these titles to see the light of day.

Wild canceled

Yoshida was asked about the most heartbreaking game cancellation during his time at Sony Interactive Entertainment. In response, he brought up Michel Ancel’s Wild. The former head of PlayStation WorldWide Studios recalled working with Ancel and his team on an “amazing” vision. He worked with the team for a long time, moving from one console generation to the next. In the end, much to his disappointment, Wild had to be canceled.

According to Yoshida, the reason behind Wild’s cancellation was that a lot of great ideas didn’t materialize into the actual game structure. He recalled that one of the earliest pitch for the title was that its world map would be the size of Europe. It was this sort of over-ambition that ultimately led to the survival game’s cancellation. The game was also planned to feature dynamic weather with seasonal changes, online play, and the option to play as various wild creatures, including wolves, sheep, fish, ants, cats, and birds. The player would control a human character and would be able to use smaller animals for spying or larger animals to assist in battles against other humans. By using shamanic powers, the player could “possess” animals, shift to the perspective of the controlled creature and use its specific skills and characteristics.

In August, 2024, Steven ter Heide, creative director at Wild Sheep Studio, confirmed that WiLD was no longer in active development. Read about it here.

PlayStation exclusive survival game, WiLD, is no longer in active development at Wild Sheep Studio, based on the latest information.

Steven ter Heide, creative director at Wild Sheep Studio, took to Twitter/X to respond to a question regarding the current status of PlayStation exclusive survival game, WiLD. In his response, Heide said that WiLD is no longer actively in development.

Wild development

The project had been in trouble long before director Michael Ancel announced his retirement from the game industry. WiLD began development in 2014. The game was initially planned to feature a large, continent-sized open world, dynamic weather with seasonal changes, online play, and the option to play as various wild creatures, including wolves, sheep, fish, ants, cats, and birds. The player would control a human character and would be able to use smaller animals for spying or larger animals to assist in battles against other humans. By using shamanic powers, the player could “possess” animals, shift to the perspective of the controlled creature and use its specific skills and characteristics.

A gameplay trailer was shown during Gamescom in August, 2014, followed by another trailer and a production film at Paris Games Week in October, 2015. The absence of updates during development led many to speculate that the game had become vaporware. Signs of hope emerged in 2019 when Wild Sheep Studio silently updated the game’s Facebook page with new cover art that was shared with the text “Light or Darkness”.

However, all hope was lost in September, 2020, when Ancel announced his retirement from the game industry. Though, he had claimed that the development of WiLD would continue without him. However, with Heide’s recent statement, we can safely say that WiLD has been shelved for all intents and purposes. It’s likely that Sony Interactive Entertainment ultimately lost interest in supporting its development as a result of the ongoing troubled development.

WiLD is one of the PS4 exclusives that has been missing the spotlight after its initial reveal in 2014 followed by a gameplay trailer in 2015. The developers are now sharing new artwork for it on the social media accounts giving the project a new life.

WiLD was supposedly in development by Wild Sheep Studio under the direction of Michael Ancel. He is currently working on Beyond Good and Evil 2 at Ubisoft so that cast a shadow of doubt over the future of the project. There was some hope when Sony registered a trademark for WiLD back in March, but there has been no update since then.

WiLD developer has been silently updating the Facebook page for the game. The two most recent updates were made on May 18 and May 27 respectively. One of them shows old artwork from the game dating back to 2015.

The other teases a new cover art, likely for the social media pages. It also has a logo of the game and was shared with the text “Light or Darkness” hinting at something else.

Sony still has a page up on their official PlayStation website for WiLD. Here is a summary of the game from this page.

Use your instincts and intuition to thrive in an incredibly hostile environment. Learn how to control living creatures, and venture into your friends’ game worlds to help them survive.

Experiment with your surroundings in your quest for survival – a simple plant could just as easily save your life… or bring about a swift death.

So WiLD was supposedly a survival game, or at least that was the goal for the developers back in 2015. It sure looks great but as far as any future announcement is concerned, we can only speculate after the trademark renewal and new artwork that Sony is planning to show it again soon.

WiLD was one the surprise announcements for the PlayStation 4 back at Gamescom in 2014. It has been missing in action for a long time now until a most recent update to the trademark, which has now given hope for a revival.

WiLD was revealed to be the work of Michel Ancel, the main developer who is behind the popular Rayman series of platformers. Ancel was reportedly working on WiLD which felt like an ambitious open-world action game with mythical elements. Looking back at it now, the game has started to show its age and looks quite dated compared to the recent game releases.

WiLD was described as an online survival game when it was first shown the world. It was set 10,000 years in the past and focused on a time when humans lived alongside nature in harmony.

The project has always looked ambitious from the onset so when it disappeared after its first couple of reveals, the people who were excited about it were left feeling a little disappointed. Sony did confirm multiple times that the game is not canceled but they never showed it again, and this was billed as one of the PS4 exclusives.

We are now so close to the end of the generation but WiLD is nowhere to be found, which is why this update to the trademark for WiLD seems interesting now, as discovered by Gematsu.

The trademark was filled by Sony Interactive Entertainment United States and relates to the WiLD video game for the PS4. It is too early to jump to a conclusion here since looking at it alone, this could probably end up being nothing. Still, it is worth considering since there has been no update on the trademark for WiLD in a long time now.
