Bethesda Softworks’ action role-playing game, Starfield, is now ranked lower than its previous game, Fallout 76, on Steam.

According to the stats available on SteamDB, Starfield has a rating of 71.67% based on a total of 84,103 user reviews, while Fallout 76 has a rating of 71.75% based on a total of 89,542 user reviews, putting the former at a lower ranking than the latter on Steam.

In comparison to other games from Bethesda Softworks, there is only one game that is ranked below Starfield, and that is Fallout 4 VR. As such, Starfield’s reception is unexpectedly low compared to other titles from the studio. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has a rating of 93.88% based on a total of 314,019 user reviews, which is significantly higher than that of Starfield.

Previously, speaking during an interview with Famitsu, Starfield Director Todd Howard mentioned that the game will receive mod support by next year. He added that him and his development team are huge fans of the feature, so they’ll be implementing it in a “big way”.

Starfield is an action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was unveiled at Bethesda’s E3 presentation in 2018 and is set in a space-themed environment. It marks Bethesda’s first new intellectual property in 25 years. The game became available for Windows and Xbox Series X/S on September 6, 2023.

Players can seamlessly switch between a first-person and third-person perspective. The game presents an open-world setting situated within the Milky Way galaxy, featuring a blend of fictional and real planetary systems. Players have the capability to land on over 1,000 planets, numerous moons, and space stations. The majority of the in-game landscapes are procedurally generated, with subsequent manual modifications and the addition of handcrafted content. The game generates terrain, alien flora and fauna, and points of interest on planets based on their star system and atmospheric conditions as the player approaches them.

Fallout 76 had a disastrous launch but three years later, the tables have turned and continuous post-launch support has greatly improved the player count.

In a new Reddit AMA, Todd Howard, the creator of the Fallout and The Elder Scrolls series, talked about the lessons that they learned from the failure of Fallout 76 and what they think about it now.

“I can only speak to the issues we’ve had, such as Fallout 76. We let people down and were able to learn and be better from it, ” said Todd in a reply to a question that asked them about their reaction to the Cyberpunk 2077 launch.

“We’re fortunate 3 years later to have 76 be one of our most played games, and it’s thanks to the 11 million players who have made it an incredible community. It’s made us much better developers in the end, ” concluded Todd.

Fallout 76 is also available to play on Xbox Game Pass so that could be one of the factors for such a huge player count. 11 million players having played the game is not a slouch, but it definitely took some time and incentive to get such a figure after the launch ended up in a major failure due to multiple issues ranging from bugs to lack of content.

All of the issues were subsequently patched out or fixed. There have been several updates to the game which added major new content, and the story has been expanded with post-launch content.

Fallout 76 is available to play now on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC.

Fallout 76 has received a major update today by Bethesda. This patch improves the user interface and inventory with a variety of fixes.

Fallout 76 fans have been asking for an increase in their Stash limit for a long time now, and this patch might have resolved their issues once and for all with an increase to the limit all the way to 1200 pounds. It gives the player more room to find and keep the loot during their exploration of the wasteland in Fallout 76.

Of course, no Fallout 76 update is inevitable without any bug fixes and there are quite a few included in the patch that has released today. The file size of this Fallout 76 update is 1.6 GB on PC through Bethesda and 2 GB through Steam, while it is a lot higher if you have the game through the Microsoft Store, weighing at 5 GB for the update. Console owners have to grab 4.2 GB to 4.8 GB of update data on PS4 and Xbox One respectively.

You can have a complete look at the Fallout 76 1.49 update patch notes below. The official update version is 1.5.1.26 on almost all platforms aside from Xbox One, where it is 1.5.1.25.

Fallout 76 Update 1.49 Patch Notes

Inventory and User Interface Improvements

  • Stash Increase: Hold onto extra gear with a Stash increase! We’ve increased the amount of weight your Stash can hold by 50%, giving you 1,200 pounds to work with.
  • New Inventory Tabs: We’ve added a few new tabs to your inventory menus so that you can better organize your gear, from your snacks and Stimpaks, to your outfits and armor.
    • New – This tab will keep track of all the items you gather during a play session, sorted by newest to oldest.
    • If you already have a stackable item in your inventory, like Steel Scrap, then new Steel Scrap you pick up will not appear in the “New” tab. Instead, it will be added to your existing stack.
    • Additionally, the “New” tab will reset if you leave your current world.
    • Armor – We’ve split Armor into its own menu tab so that you can keep your defensive gear separate from your other Apparel.
    • Food/Drinks – Your food and drinks are now split out from “Aid” into their own “Food/Drinks” inventory tab.
    • Please note that your Chems and Serums will remain in “Aid.”
  • Stack Weight: What’s weighing you down? From now on, when you select a stacked item in your inventory, the Pip-Boy will show you the individual weight and the stack weight.
  • Vending Machine Map Previews: The tooltip that appears when you’re previewing another player’s Vending Machines on the Map will now show the number of 1-, 2-, and 3-star legendary weapons and armor they’re selling. This way, you’ll have more information about the legendary goodies players are selling before you choose to Fast Travel to their C.A.M.P.s.
    • Additionally, Vending Machine categories that are empty will no longer appear in the tooltip to help you more easily see what types of items players do have for sale.

Additional User Interface Updates

  • Atomic Shop: We’ve added a button to each category page in the Atomic Shop that will let you show or hide the items you already own, so that you can browse what’s still available with less clutter.
  • Build Mode Visual Improvement: We’ve changed the color of the outline that appears when you build objects in your C.A.M.P. from green to light blue, which should be more friendly for our builders who have colorblindness.
    • This change is only visible when the object you’re trying to place is in a valid location, and invalid placement outlines are still red.

Daily Ops

  • Elder Tier Rewards: In response to community feedback, we’ve adjusted Daily Ops rewards so that you will always receive an item from the rare rewards pool whenever you complete an Op fast enough to reach Elder Tier.

Spread the Love: New Challenges and Rewards

  • Starting today, and lasting until February 16, you can claim a free “Heart Wrencher” Skin for the Pipe Wrench in the Atomic Shop, and then use it to complete Challenges that will unlock new cosmetic and consumable rewards!
    • Earn Lunchboxes, Perk Card Packs, and Repair Kits by defeating enemies with your Heart Wrencher every day during the Spread the Love event.

Todd Howard has commented on the importance of SP games and how they let down a lot of people after the launch of Fallout 76.

In an interview with The Guardian, Todd Howard talked about the launch of Fallout 76 and its evolving nature as a GaaS model. He admitted that there were a lot of fans that were disappointed with how the game turned out at release. “We let a lot of people down,” said Howard.

As for single-player games, which have been the highlight for Bethesda Softworks, he stresses their importance saying that the studio is a big fan of this genre.

“Obviously, we’re big fans of single-player and we’ve had some success with some multiplayer-focused games,” says Howard. “We have found that even if it’s multiplayer, whether it’s Elder Scrolls Online or Fallout 76, a large number of our players want to play it like a single-player game and not have the other players distract from it. Games handle multiplayer in different ways, and I think it all has merit.”

fallout 76 single-player games

We have already covered that the upcoming Starfield will be an SP game, and based on the comments of Todd Howard, there is no reason to doubt it. The Elder Scrolls VI is another upcoming project that is currently in development at Bethesda along with Starfield.

Howard also shared his vision of the next-generation future praising the fast load times as a big factor for the new generation.

“Let’s just cast forward to the next five to 10 years of gaming – for me, it’s more about access than clock cycles,” he says. “Just the time it takes to even turn [a console] on and load up some of these games is a barrier – it’s time that you’re not enjoying being in that world … The kind of games we make are ones that people are going to sit down and play for hours at a time. If you can access a game more easily, and no matter what device you’re on or where you are, that’s what I think the next five to 10 years in gaming is about.”

“I’d like to see more reactivity [in game worlds], more systems clashing together that players can express themselves with. I think chasing scale for scale’s sake is not always the best goal.”

Bethesda Softworks has been recently acquired by Microsoft paving the way for a partnership that is worth billions of dollars. While it hasn’t materialized yet, Microsoft hasn’t clarified whether this affects the upcoming major projects of Bethesda with Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI in the near future.

Fallout 76 had a major update announced at E3 2019 that added Battle Royale support. Bethesda has now followed with another patch that brings the Nuclear Winter from pre-Beta to Beta phase.

Fallout 76 might have slowed down after its terrible launch but Bethesda was still supporting the game with free post-launch content updates, making it into a live service game that improved the quality and added new in-game content. Today, Fallout 76 has received update 1.20 on PS4 which is also available on Xbox One and PC.

According to Bethesda, this new Fallout 76 update has made the Nuclear Winter Battle Royale mode jump from its pre-Beta to Beta phase. They have made some design changes as a part of this new update. This is in addition to various tweaks and adjustments that were made in Fallout 76 update 1.20. It also includes many bug fixes for the game.

Nuclear Winter Design Changes

Items and Loot
  • Underarmor: Players can now favorite one Underarmor in the Atomic Shop for use in Nuclear Winter, in addition to one Headwear item and one Outfit.
  • Automatic Combat Rifles: Can now be found in Small Supply Crates rather than pre-existing containers in the world.
  • Submachine Guns: Can now be found in Medium Supply Crates rather than Small Supply Crates.
  • Supply Crates: Adjusted Supply Crate density in a few areas where more Crates were spawning than intended.
Perks
  • Dead Man Sprinting: This Perk previously was not applying its effects correctly and has been redesigned. Dead Man Sprinting now causes Action Points to drain 25% slower while under 30% HP.
Overseer Progression

User Interface
  • Tutorials: A “More Info” button has been added to the Nuclear Winter Perk Card menu, which can be used to re-open the Perk Card tutorial.

Fallout 76 players can now download the most recent update that will add a new event to the game. Project Paradise Event is a part of Fallout 76 patch 9.5 which has been released today on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Fallout 76 has continued to receive updates from Bethesda Softworks since launching back in November last year. These updates have changed a lot of elements within the game and fulfilled its purpose of functioning as a live service game. Even though some of the changes that were made in Fallout 76 were negatively received by fans, like the ability to purchase in-game items, there have been plenty of great content as well.

Fallout 76 didn’t launch with a season pass as Bethesda Softworks promised post-launch free content for the game. They wanted to make it function like games as a service so they continued to release new updates for it. Today’s update is another patch that adds free content and implements some bug fixes.

Fallout 76 update version 1.16 is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Bethesda is calling it Fallout 76 patch 9.5 on all platforms. Here are the details about this new update as shared by Bethesda.

Patch Version

Download sizes for today’s patch will be approximately 5.5 GB for consoles and under 1 GB for PC.

  • PC: 1.1.5.4
  • PS4: 1.1.5.4
  • Xbox: 1.1.5.4

Wild Appalachia

Project Paradise Event
  • Sink your teeth into some experimental testing by joining the Project Paradise event, which takes place in cavernous Biome Labs that are now available for exploration beneath Arktos Pharma.
    • To start Project Paradise, head to the Arktos Pharma building in the Forest region of Appalachia. Enter the building’s lobby, and then use the elevator to descend into the labs.
  • Product research has never been so wild! Aid Arktos Pharma with their experiments on the Appalachian creatures that inhabit the labs and you’ll be rewarded with new loot and XP.
    • All three Biome Labs will require your attention if you’d like to claim the best rewards, so most adventurers will find it beneficial to form a group.
  • Note: This event will be daunting for Dwellers who are fresh from the Vault, as you will encounter enemies who are level 50+.
Player Vending Machines
  • The “Inspect” option can now be used to view additional details about items in other players’ Vending Machines, making it easier to find that perfect Legendary for your collection.

Fallout 76 is getting a new update today for Wild Appalachia Patch 8.5. Bethesda Softworks has dropped the patch notes for this update ahead of the scheduled server maintenance for Fallout 76.

Fallout 76 received a new dungeon called “The Burrows” recently in an update. Bethesda Softworks is now following it up with an update that will make it easier to take snapshots in the game using a new camera system.

This camera system is also part of a new quest that will be implemented along with the update that is set to release today. Here are the highlights of this new update.

  • ProSnap Deluxe Camera: Find and equip this new functional Camera to snap photos more easily than ever before, begin the “Bucket List” quest, and complete Camera-related Challenges!
  • Basic Repair Kits: New single-use consumables that can be used to repair one item to 100% Condition without using any crafting materials. You can visit the Atomic Shop to purchase Basic Repair Kits.
    • Further below, we’ve also shared additional details on our thinking behind adding utility items like this to the Atomic Shop.
  • Improved Repair Kits: New single-use consumables that can be used to buff one item to 150% Condition without using any crafting materials. These are rare items that can be earned by completing some types of in-game content.
  • Balance Adjustments: Aluminum Trays, Oil Cans, and Empty Cans now provide Aluminum when scrapped and we’ve increased their base Cap values.

Repair Kits have started to cause a controversy in the game after Bethesda ended up taking a U-turn on their statement when they said that the game won’t offer any microtransactions aside from cosmetic stuff. Repair kits can be used by purchasing them through the in-game Atomic shop.

Fallout 76 was a troubled project and it was even more clear when the game was released by Bethesda Softworks. There were multiple controversies that surrounded the launch of the game.

Todd Howard talked about the success that Bethesda Softworks achieved with Fallout 76 despite the rocky development cycle and the controversies that surrounded its launch. He shared his view on it at Bethesda Game Days last week.

“We have a huge, millions of players, and a large player base in this game; we are receiving tons of feedback. We aim to build a kind of Fallout platform. We have tons of ideas, it’s been a crazy journey so far, and we are excited, there’s a ton of cool content on the way, ” said Todd Howard.

“It’s been an incredible experience. We will do anything we can to reward that, this year, next year and in the coming years we have big things planned.”

Howard stressed the importance of traditional games like Skyrim and Fallout 4. “We continue to do more traditional things, or what I would call them, Bethesda games.”

He was also upfront about the difficulties that they faced with Fallout 76 during its development. Despite this all, the game seems to have done “very, very well” for Bethesda.

“For us, Fallout 76 is a very, very new thing for our studio, We knew we would have a lot of stumbling blocks in the game and had some, some of them a lot more difficult than we anticipated. This is a very different and new project for us. We’ve built up the studios, we’re now four different studios in North America, in Rockville, Austin, Dallas, and Dallas. Montreal and this was a game that demanded so much for the people of these four studios to work on the game. We knew the launch was going to be just the beginning. We’re excited that the game did very, very well.”

Bethesda apparently has banned a legitimate Fallout 76 player who spent more than 900 hours in the game to farm rare materials, ammo, and other in-game loot. They banned the account for having too much ammo according to the ban report shared by the player.

Reddit user Glorf12 claims to have played more than 900 hours of Fallout 76. He made a thread on Reddit where he detailed his experience with the game after playing it for more than 900 hours. He wrote a guide that explained the farming locations for the various in-game loot including legendary and rare loot. After he made the thread, he was banned by Bethesda Softworks with the following message.

This was apparently against the terms of service for Fallout 76 and they claim that this was done through an exploit. The email does state that depending on a future patch that might fix this exploit, the account will be allowed again but any further violation can lead to a permanent ban.

The user speculates that his ban might have to do with trading with another secondary account that was used to trade some of the loot that he farmed, and players could have reported him after seeing such a high ranking character trading with a low ranking one.

Another issue was with how the system kept check of the ammo that was owned by him. Due to the weight limit, it was simply not possible for him to keep a stock of more than 100,000 ammo as reported in the ban message. He dropped the ammo to free up inventory space and get over the weight limit but apparently, the system keeps track of every ammo that the player collects in the game.

Bethesda Softworks has replied back to the user with a message that they want him to file a support ticket so the team can look into the case, but banning such a dedicated player on the chance that he is exploiting in-game doesn’t really paint them in a positive light. It will simply add more to the mess that is Fallout 76 and its launch, and this is not ending any time soon.
