Respawn Entertainment has recently canceled a first-person shooter project that had been in development, but new details confirm that the game was not related to the Titanfall franchise. Instead, it was a different title, originally being developed by the team that had worked on an unannounced Star Wars FPS. Meanwhile, Steve Fukuda, the director of the original Titanfall, is prototyping a separate project, though it remains in its early stages.

Industry insider Jeff Grubb addressed the cancellation on BlueSky, stating, “This wasn’t a Titanfall game. It was that FPS Star Wars team that had shifted to something else.” Grubb later elaborated on his Game Mess podcast, explaining that the original Star Wars FPS had been canceled before the team transitioned to a new project. However, this subsequent project was also scrapped. While the details of what the team was working on remain unclear, Grubb confirmed that it was entirely separate from Titanfall.

Despite the cancellation, Respawn is still engaged in multiple projects. According to Grubb, Steve Fukuda has been leading a new initiative, though it is still in the prototyping phase. He emphasized that this approach aligns with Respawn’s development strategy, where projects undergo extensive experimentation before full production begins. While it is uncertain if this prototype will result in a full game, it has not been canceled at this stage.

Currently, Respawn’s primary focus remains on Star Wars Jedi 3, the next installment in the Jedi series, and ongoing support for Apex Legends. The studio is also collaborating with Bit Reactor on a tactical Star Wars game, which, as of now, has not been officially canceled. However, Grubb noted that EA’s current approach favors a “fewer, bigger” strategy, suggesting that the publisher may be scaling back on experimental projects.

This news follows an earlier report that surfaced on LinkedIn, where former Respawn Executive Assistant and Production Coordinator Emilee Evans revealed that an unannounced multiplayer FPS had been canceled. Evans, who had been working on the project for the past year, is now seeking new opportunities in the gaming industry, along with other developers affected by the cancellation.

In addition to details regarding its characters and story, it has been revealed that the canceled Titanfall Legends game was inspired by Doom Eternal.

Speaking during the latest episode of GiantBomb’s Game Mess Mornings, Jeff Grubb revealed that the Titanfall Legends game that had been in development at Respawn was inspired by Doom Eternal, and he also had some additional details to share regarding the canceled game’s characters and story.

Titanfall legends characters story doom eternal

According to Grubb, EA and Respawn were looking to turn the Apex Legends franchise into a platform akin to Call of Duty. Titanfall Legends was planned as the single-player component of this initiative. The canceled game was set to feature Legends, who would show up from time to time and give special powers to the playable character. The titans themselves were to function like classic cars, and would be rare and expensive to acquire.

Grubb also shared that BT would play a major role in the story, and Rampart would be the one to bring her back to life. Players were to have the opportunity to build and upgrade BT and go on search for parts of the Lost Ark in order to enhance strength.

Regarding the game’s cancellation, Grubb mentioned that lots of key people from the early days of development had left Respawn. According to him, EA had deemed it financially difficult to make a Titanfall game because, according to the publisher, a single-player only game doesn’t make as much money as a multiplayer game. On the other hand, and a game featuring a multiplayer mode may have been a diversion for the Apex Legends user base.

Lastly, Grubb stated that here is another non-licenced game, implying that it has nothing to do with the Star Wars IP, currently in the works at Respawn, and that the project is led by Steve Fukuda. As for whether this is Titanfall 3 or something entirely new is anyone’s guess.

Respawn Entertainment and EA might release a new Titanfall game called Apex Legends. This is according to a new rumor that alleges that this a free-to-play Battle Royale game set in the Titanfall universe.

First of all, EA has indeed trademarked “Project Apex” and “Apex Legends” under their company name. The publisher also talked about Respawn Entertainment’s output in 2019 saying that they will release “multiple games” by Holiday 2019. One of these could be this rumored Titanfall Battle Royale game. It was first shared by YouTube Channel The Quartering.

Now the interesting portion of the rumor is regarding the game itself. The pitch for this has been described as “Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Blackout meets Rainbow Six Siege” which sounds interesting in theory. It just depends on how the free-to-play model is used here and whether the monetization model of the game affects the gameplay balance or if it is purely cosmetic.

While this will be set in the same Titanfall universe, it won’t really feel like a proper Titanfall game. This game is allegedly already available to play for the top streamers and other influencers who are under embargo from EA not to disclose any information for it. They will supposedly reveal the game today so if this rumor is indeed true, we will find out in a few hours.
